It has been a melancholy day today. I left during Sunday school and went to Karl's funeral with Cassandra and Mark. It all seems so surreal that he's gone. I wasn't really close to him or anything, but I knew him pretty well, as I saw him quite a bit when he was Cassandra's boyfriend. He was a nice young man -- very considerate and polite. I can't imagine how his family felt -- losing their 20-year-old son.

But it's interesting that this summer he was in a near-fatal motorcycle accident. He had been in a coma and in ICU for a long time. He had recovered, but was still in pretty bad shape when he had the accident on Wednesday with the kerosene heater explosion. It's almost as if it were his time to go this summer, but he had been given just a little longer to be with his family. His father spoke at the funeral, and it was very touching to listen to him speak about his faith in an afterlife and what he thought Karl was doing now. I'm glad he has that faith to carry him through this. Some things in life make no sense, but when we have faith it is so much easier.
